Learning to fly like a real pilot means not looking out the window. I took my first
flying lesson in 1989. Since then I have kept my heads out of the clouds. Now,
I’m learning to fly in the clouds, and safely get back down again. This might sound
dull and boring, and it is at times. Why would anyone want to fly in clouds?
The idea is to fly through and above the clouds to sunny weather and fair skies.
With my new training, it makes flying safer by a wide margin. It also allows me
to confidently make a trip, not having to worry about clouds coming in, blocking
my view.
That is the best part of flying -- the freedom to just go somewhere with friends,
in my own private aircraft. Its called flying IFR, or Instrument Flight Rules.
My training allows me to fly the aircraft with reference only to the gauges and
dials in the cockpit. With my new certification, I am able to fly more powerful
and faster aircraft. Flying is more work now, but the result is it is a lot more
fun!
